Oregon singer/songwriter an expert at savoring little imperfections

  • We Say...

Oregon's singer-songwriters swap backing musicians so often, they must have a trading post hidden out under the Evergreens. Hailing from the tiny logging town of Coquille, chanteuse Laura Gibson gets her pick of the Northwest's best, with members of the Decemberists and M. Ward's band helping her craft warm, homespun folk ballads built around vintage instruments like banjo, musical saw and marxophone. On her second album, this forest ranger's daughter shows how she's attracted such talent: With a close-miked, nylon-string guitar and a voice that cracks and coos and breaks with jazzy phrasing, she's an expert at savoring little imperfections. On a set divided into two sections like sides of a classic vinyl record — "Communion Songs" and "Funeral Songs" — Gibson makes even the most atmospheric tunes sound earthy, and Grammy-nominated producer Tucker Martime keeps the mood cozy, trading his computer for a vintage tape machine and recording many of the songs live. As a result, tracks like "Glory" feel so intimate, rising and falling with Gibson's breath, that the singer could file a restraining order against you just for getting close enough to hear it. Luckily, you get the feeling that what's most private here should be made public — all the better to give this great small-town secret her due.
