  • They Say...

A remix companion to Lesbians on Ecstasy's self-titled album, Giggles in the Dark muddies the giddy high-concept joke behind the original recording, which molded gay-themed folk and pop tunes into stomping electro-clash anthems. By remixing songs that were already, on a fundamental level, socio-cultural mashups, these versions don't add much conceptually. Musically, however, they can be quite entertaining: Le Tigre's breakbeat-heavy version of "Revolt" adds hectoring, shouty vocals and a hard rock guitar sample, and Tracy + the Plastics' version of "Summer Luv" strips the song down to Missy Elliott-style naked beats. As an album, the original is both funnier and more interesting, but there's enough new and different material on Giggles in the Dark to appeal to most fans.
