  • They Say...

This odd set pairs Lee "Scratch" Perry's 1978 album Return of the Super Ape with six tracks Perry produced for the Wailers at Randy's between 1970 and 1971, which hardly makes a "gold" collection. Now if Return of the Super Ape had been included here along with its superior predecessor, 1976's Super Ape, or with Perry's other 1978 collection, Roast Fish Collie Weed & Corn Bread, or if -- heaven forbid -- all three of these eccentric Perry gems had been packaged together, it might have been a different story, but alas, the licensing label here obviously felt it necessary to throw Bob Marley's name into the mix, so listeners get the six Wailers tracks tacked on at the end, and while they're fine productions, they simply have nothing in common with what Perry was doing at his Black Ark studio in 1978.
