  • We Say...

Given Cohen’s obvious (sometimes too much so) appreciation of the feminine, it’s not surprising that women have played a substantial role in creating his music as well as inspiring it. On Various Postions, he shares the microphone with Jennifer Warnes, who would later repay the favor by recording an album of Cohen’s songs entitled Famous Blue Raincoat. “Dance Me to the End of Love” is one of Cohen’s purest and most untroubled love songs, and “If It Be You Will” finds Cohen expressing vulnerability in the face of the ultimate authority. The album’s highlight, of course, is “Hallelujah,” the most covered number in Cohen’s songbook. Even if you wind up preferring Jeff Buckley’s version — or John Cale’s, or Rufus Wainwright’s — Cohen’s has a desperation none of the others can match.

  • They Say...

Recorded with vocalist Jennifer Warnes (who later cut the album Famous Blue Raincoat, a collection of Leonard Cohen compositions), Various Positions is a stunning return to form -- Cohen's strongest work since New Skin for the Old Ceremony. Cryptic and spartan, the set continues in the eclectic vein of recent efforts, but with greater clarity and focus, resulting in an intriguingly diffuse collection ranging from the Serge Gainsbourg-esque pop of "Dance Me to the End of Love" to the boozy, country-inflected "The Captain."
