A imaginative, beautifully performed concertos that adds immeasurably to our knowledge of this great Finnish composer.

  • We Say...

Sibelius’s Violin Concerto was first heard in 1904 when, in the words of Sibelius’s biographer, "a red-faced and perspiring Viktor Novácek fought a losing battle with [the] solo part." The composer decided to overhaul the work and the second (and definitive) version certainly has a purity and coolness that is part of its allure. This is a typical BIS recording — imaginative, beautifully performed and adding immeasurably to our knowledge of this great Finnish composer. Leonidas Kavakos tackles the fearsome difficulties of the 1904 version with real passion just as he plays the now accepted later version with great taste and style. Once again, Vänskä draws from the Lahti orchestra playing of real depth and character. And of course, everything is stunningly recorded.
