They Say...
When CMH named this collection, they decided to go for broke. Their collection wouldn't just include the best banjo picking from eastern Virginia, or the South, or even the entire United States. Instead, it would be World's Greatest Bluegrass Banjos. To back up their assertion, CMH brought together recordings by banjoists like Vic Jordon, Sonny Osborne, and Grandpa Jones. There's a nifty version of "Limehouse Blues" by Eddie Addock that even includes some nifty guitar and a bouncy take on "Dueling Banjos" by Don Reno. Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass deliver a charged-up rendition of "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms" with the help of Kenny Ingram's speedy banjo technique, while Arthur Smith and Don Reno cut loose on a funky piece titled "Memphis Five String," which sounds a little like a mountaineer's version of "Memphis." While World's Greatest Bluegrass Banjos sells itself on the strength of its five-string material, many of these pieces leave room for fiddle, mandolin, and guitar solos, sweetening the package. A number of these songs/instrumentals, like "Soldier's Joy," will be familiar, but there are also pleasant surprises like a banjo-infused "Tequila." For the banjo fanatic and casual bluegrass fan, this collection offers 45 minutes of fancy picking.
