  • They Say...

This third installment of Lester Young's complete recordings opens with a pleasantly knocked-out Aladdin session from April 2, 1947. Four additional Aladdin sides recorded on December 29th are even groovier, thanks largely to bassist Curly Russell, guitarist Chuck Wayne, and pianist Gene DiNovi. Pres expresses himself most eloquently on the ballads. Unlike most label-oriented exclusive reissue compilations, the Classics chronology traces the evolution of Lester Young from Aladdin to Savoy and on to his first sessions with Mercury's producer, Norman Granz. The Savoy date will forever be treasured for its measured anarchy held together by pianist Junior Mance and drummer Roy Haynes. While critics and historians like to celebrate Young's decade-long alignment with Granz by wagging their heads and making grim references to the saxophonist's fragile health, the initial Mercury recordings of Lester Young are unparalleled masterpieces of casual collectivity. This segment of the Lester Young story positively glows with the presence of Hank Jones, Ray Brown, and Buddy Rich on the session of September 17, 1949; John Lewis on five sides cut during June of 1950; and three marvelous studies from January 1951, whereby Lewis and Young collaborate with Gene Ramey and Jo Jones. "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" is definitively cool and calm, intimate and personal as a daydream or a page from a diary.
