The godfathers of groove: Liquid Liquid invent post-punk floor-fillers.

  • We Say...

The influential, ill-fated Liquid Liquid's output was relegated to just 3 EPs and 2 singles, released between 1980 and 1984. Fortunately, their music still sounds as engaging and innovative as it did back then, referencing the same big world of rhythms as hip-hop DJs Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash, who were both contemporaries and fans. To wit: Richard McGuire's throbbing bass line in "Cavern" lives on in Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five's biggest hit, "White Lines (Don't Do It)."

Liquid Liquid were just one among many New York bands who moved the downtown scene from punk and glam to Afrodiasporic grooves. But unlike many of their no wave, James Brown-loving contemporaries, who emphasized explosive, brash amateurism, Liquid Liquid aspired to trance-like minimalism. What made songs like "Optimo," "Bellhead" and "Groupmegroup" so startlingly fresh was their attention to detail. "Scraper" locks into a groove, shifts into a gorgeous marimba figure, and then transitions into another break so balanced and nuanced DJ Premier would be impressed. Vocalist Salvatore Principato's keens and wails function primarily as texture, not focal point. And Liquid Liquid's references to dub, samba and salsa seem to point forward toward the freestyle, rave and deep house scenes to come.
