Chicago duo sneaks sharp words in a soft package.

We Say...
The Chicago brothers Frank and John Navin of the Aluminum Group grasp the quiet power of subtle contrast. While evoking the gentle melodies and reassuring cleanliness of easy-listening ‘60s pop, these avuncular aesthetes sneak into their lyrics gentle reminders of life’s messiness — remembrances of romances dashed, the economics of love, even iPod headphones leaking treble into calm elevators. While other conceptual artists attempt to wow audiences with big loud theories, the Navins favor disguise. They’d rather slip a subversive notion into a techno-tinged bossa nova lullaby than shine a harsh light on their unfashionable intelligence.
Their seventh album marks the conclusion of their Happyness trilogy. Like everything about the Aluminum Group, this triptych’s concept is mild and delicately covert. Album opener “Milligram of Happiness” is typically ambiguous: are they crooning about antidepressants, self-medication, or the ways in which we settle for small perks to get us through daily dullness? Tortoise leader John McEntire’s typically airtight production heightens the sonic claustrophobia, but the songs are catchier and generally faster than usual, less reliant on electronic baubles or shifts into acoustic balladry for stylistic definition. From a distance, this seems like the Navins’ smoothest set yet. Only close inspection reveals artful cracks in the glaze.
