Minimal house star get surprisingly subdued

  • We Say...

The Tunisian-German producer and DJ Loco Dice has his roots in Düsseldorf's hip-hop scene, but you're not likely to notice that on 7 Dunham Place. Instead, his debut album reflects the path he's taken since 2002, when a debut single for Timo Maas's Four:Twenty label sent him down the path that has made him something of a minimal-house superstar, complete with records for Minus and Cadenza and a coveted place alongside Ricardo Villalobos as one of the DJs behind Cocoon's double-CD mix Green & Blue. Despite the artist's main-stage status, his releases have always been more subdued than you might expect, and Dunham is no exception. While a track like "Tight Laces" carry plenty of sub-bass wallop and high-definition handclaps, what makes it stand out are the slippery Chutes 'n' Ladders melodies weaving through the background. The opening "Breakfast at Nina's," with its gently pulsing keys and bluesy, distant vocal samples, works like a kind of exfoliant, with porous synthesizer pads scraping away all the excess. Album standout "How Do I Know" is harder hitting but no less economical, letting a half-dozen moving parts create a dazzling clockwork of rhythmic efficiency.
