The least angst-ridden of Brahms' symphonies and an autumnal concerto (for the unprecedented combination of violin and cello) come together under the baton of Bernard Haitink. Soloists Gordan Nikolitch (violin) and Tim Hugh (cello) give a particularly introspective and impassioned performance of the concerto, while Haitink's performance of the symphony is most noteworthy for the magical serenity he brings to the opening bars, and the rumbustious yet majestic quality of the finale.
