High lonesome from the last of the great pre-rock and roll brother duets

  • We Say...

The last of the great brother duets before the Everly Brothers translated that style into rock 'n' roll, the Louvins combined the high tenor harmonies of the Monroe Brothers (Bill and Charlie) with the smoothness of Bill and Ira Bolick (known as the Blue Sky Boys). They began as a gospel act with close bluegrass-style harmonies, and "The Family That Prays" shows they never lost their touch. But they weren't successful until the early 50s, when they joined the Opry and began applying those chilling bluegrass/gospel harmonies to modern secular themes like "Cash on the Barrelhead" and "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby." Then they gave audiences the best of both worlds.
