A languorous and ecstatic record that operates entirely on its own surreal logic

  • We Say...

Lucky Dragons' original work is situated in two camps: the stoic, avant-garde classical "art song" tradition of Harry Partch and Moondog, and that very West Coast brand of wavery-voiced, indie-rock typically associated with Phil Elverum (the Microphones). The 19th (!) album by this duo of Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara (with friends chipping in, many of them credited for playing "rocks" — not a euphemism, but actual, physical rocks), finds them combining a decidedly experimental bent with a strict pop sensibility. Their music is highly meditative and percussive, similar in structure to High Places and Animal Collective. The main exception is that most tracks on Dream Island are more controlled and refined. In fact, these songs approach experimental art structures so much that one would not be surprised to learn that the entire thing had been written down as sheet music before being performed. The (currently) LA-based combo aims for communal ecstasy and hits the mark often. The songs — usually abetted by gently plucked guitars — incorporate unusual instrumentation such as gongs and the recorder, but manage to avoid pretension. True to its title, the record operates according to its own surreal logic at a languorous and hypnotic pitch.
