The most emotionally charged music in the micro/minimal continuum belongs to the slight Finn born Sasu Ripatti. As Luomo, he’s issued three albums, the first and best two of which are cherry-picked for this satisfying combo platter. The first three tracks, from 2000’s Vocalcity, set the amorphous agenda: creeping-vine synth hooks over shadowy echoes, implacable basslines and vocal lines that gradually emerge from the dubby deep. The final four, from 2003’s The Present Lover, are more corporeal: Ripatti’s more confident and direct, resulting in stuff like “Body Speaking,” maybe the sexiest track in all of micro/minimal-dom, and “The Present Lover,” maybe the most dazzling.
