  • They Say...

While Lynn Anderson's star never shined as brightly as Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette's, she nonetheless produced a long string of country hits between the mid-'60s and early '70s. Early hits like "No Another Time" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" have a more produced sound than Lynn's music from the same time period. The lyrics of songs like "Promises, Promises" and "Flattery Will Get You Everywhere" also reflect the same ambiguity of a woman's place in the modern world expressed by Wynette. What most people, even non-country music fans, will remember most vividly, is Anderson's 1970 version of "Rose Garden," a Joe South song that reached number three on the pop charts. "Top of the World," from 1973, will be equally familiar. One nice thing about 16 Biggest Hits, though, is that it gives a fuller portrait of Anderson's career beyond these obvious hits. It's also noteworthy that a number of her songs crossed over in the early '70s, though none charted as high as "Rose Garden." 16 Biggest Hits is an enjoyable one-disc collection that will please both country music and Anderson fans.
