  • They Say...

Michaela Grobelny has been one of the least-heralded figures in the Cologne dance community, despite being one of the operators of the Sub Static label and releasing several of her own 12" singles on Traum and Trapez, in addition to her home base. Schwarzweiss is a seven-track double-vinyl pack that's long enough to be considered her first proper album. The release shows that she continues to excel at making low-key microhouse with dark and dubby undercurrents that's plenty pleasurable despite rarely tearing the roof off. Each track is on roughly the same plane as far as quality is concerned, built on sturdy, moving (and occasionally acid-dipped) basslines. DJs and dancers should eat it right up, but it wasn't made available on CD, meaning that not nearly enough people will come in contact with it. That's too bad -- it's deserving of as much attention as any other single-artist full-length dance release from this community.
