A politically charged modern landmark of the opera repertoire

  • We Say...

Composer John Adams, librettist Alice Goodman and director Peter Sellers found in Richard Nixon’s groundbreaking 1972 trip to communist China a modern myth similar to those opera composers have been inspired by since the dawn of the art form. The result, premiered just 15 years later, is one of the very few modern operas with a shot at joining the standard repertory, and this bold and thrilling performance, led by Marin Alsop, makes its case even more strongly. Adams’ propulsive music, shifting and shading between bright and ominous, brings to life characters both making history and buffeted by it.
