  • They Say...

Little in the charmingly off-key simplicity of the Marshmallow Coast's Seniors and Juniors anticipated the quantum leap forward made by the follow-up, Marshmallow Coasting. Recorded with the aid of Andy Gonzales' Of Montreal mates, the disc often suggests a mutated clone of that band's classic Gay Parade album, lacking its conceptual density (at least superficially) but achieving a similar balance between childlike wonderment and skewed pop brilliance that's both defiantly retro and proudly postmodern. Gonzales' fractured melodies benefit enormously from the collaborative model: Marshmallow Coasting thrives on the kinds of bright harmonies and complex arrangements absent from his earlier solo efforts, and although it's something of a self-inflicted knock against the incestuousness of the Elephant 6 aesthetic that Gonzales sounds exactly like Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes on tracks like "Lonliest (sic) Heart in Texas" -- maybe it is Barnes, who knows? -- its also a tribute to the collective's unique and unified spirit.
