While it was Carl Maria von Weber’s operas that helped to usher in the Romantic era in Germany, it is his clarinet works that are most often performed today. It’s not hard to hear why they’re so beloved when Martin Fröst takes the stage. All you need to do is simply listen to the third movement of Weber’s first concerto to understand his mastery of both instrument and piece, wherein he seems to take the Allegretto even faster than its title indicates. Of course, Fröst is as only good as his collaborators and Espoo, Finland’s Tapiola Sinfonietta proves up to the task — they match Fröst throughout, giving him the subtle and nuanced backing he so richly deserves.
