  • They Say...

A collection of Smokey Robinson productions sung by Mary Wells is long overdue. You Beat Me to the Punch comes close -- of the 11 selections, seven are Smokey Robinson songs. On "Everybody Needs Love" (by Norman Whitfield & Eddie Holland) is similar to a Robinson production and features the Temptations backing Wells. She isn't comfortable singing the standard "I Only Have Eyes for You" or Jesse Belvin's "Guess Who," and Janie Bradford & Richard Wylie's "I'll Still Be Around" is merely competent. However, the exquisiteness of "Two Lovers," "Operator," "He's the One I Love," "My Guy," and other Smokey Robinson classics cannot be denied.
