  • They Say...

16 Spliff is an awkwardly titled compilation of reggae tracks released in the past couple of years on the Burning Bush reissue imprint. The label is a no-frills conveyor of solid reggae mostly drawn from the golden '70s era. They don't seem to believe in documentation or coherent presentation, and that trend is continued here as there are no liner notes at all and the tracks are thrown together somewhat randomly. That being said, this is still a very strong collection that by bringing together lovers rock from Gregory Isaacs, Horace Andy, and Dennis Brown, roots reggae from Culture, reggae-pop from Jimmy Cliff and Ken Boothe, dub from Lee Perry and Sly & Robbie, and the DJ sound of I-Roy and Trinity creates a short overview of some classic sounds. Not perfect or comprehensive, but a good listen nonetheless.
