One of Africa's first female stars steals the show from her famed mentor.

  • We Say...

Eswi yo wapi might be short (it's a hair over 30 minutes), but what this lacks in length it makes up for in quality. There's scorching '80s soukous from Mbilia Bel, one of Africa's first big female stars, and her mentor, Tabu Ley Rocheareau, one of the seminal singers of Congolese music. She's the star here, as he takes a back seat to let her shine, whether on the fast-paced title cut or the slower, sensual "Kelhla." Rochereau's band is infernally hot, inventive and propulsive, but Bel soars charismatically above them. It's impossible not to be sucked into the irresistible slipstream of this record, pulled along by ringing guitars, pounding polyrhythms and addictive basslines. Bel's voice projects effortless power, a supple, vital instrument that's made for soukous, commanding the band; you hear this and realise it was only a matter of time before she moved on to solo stardom. But this combination crackles with electricity.
