  • They Say...

With thrashing guitars and heavily processed vocals, Means to an End's ...reaction is an angry album and an aural assault. The band's heavy rock works best on songs like "Faith Is Taking Over," a political diatribe decrying war politics. Often, though, the band's processed vocals seemed buried under an industrial grind or at least competing with it. Many songs like "Burning Time" and "Automatic" are relentless in their attack, making the Sex Pistols seem rather tame, and are likely to leave some listeners feeling assailed and emotionally bruised. Other songs like "Removal" grovel in a slow grind that leaves a creepy residue, while "For What" sounds like a Garbage outtake from 2.0 without the advantage of Shirley Manson's vocals. It seems possible that under this morass of industrial clamor Means to an End has a serious point to make about the world we live in, and that the band's overwhelming approach may be an attempt to break through the noise of a society asleep at the wheel of history. But it is also unlikely that those unaccustomed to this full-metal attack will wish to delve that deeply into the muddle. This is angry music by a seemingly angry band, destined to fire up Means to an End's fans and leave non-fans feeling fired upon.
