Milton Berle analyzes the basic forms of comedy with author Larry Wilde.

  • We Say...

Like a wisecracking 20th-century Plato, Milton Berle analyzes the basic forms of comedy with author Larry Wilde: there's the one-liner, the malapropism, the straight-man, the "Dumb Dora," the block routine (think Abbott & Costello's "Who's On First?" shtick), "selling your car" (mistaken interpretation), the "Irish-Jew" (which, unfortunately, he doesn't explain) and "This, I gotta see" ("The honeymoon couple checks in and the guy's ear is against the wall and he thinks they're having an affair but they're just packing a bag. He says 'I can't get it in. Sit on it. Well, you sit on it and I'll sit on you.'"). Asked why the majority of comedians are Jewish, Berle is defensive, even dumbfounded. Perhaps even stranger is that in the 47-minute-long interview about Uncle Miltie's legendary contributions to Broadway, Vegas, radio and television, Wilde fails to ask Berle about his penchant for swiping the gags of fellow comics or his infamous ankle-spanking schlong.
