  • We Say...

A member of the much-feted Bay Area DJ troupe the Invisibl Skratch Piklz and the replacement for Beastie Boys' DJ Hurricane, Mix Master Mike has turntable skills in spades, but unlike many of his crabbing and flaring colleagues, he's also a pretty good producer. 1998's Anti Theft Device, Mike's second album, was released right as the hype around "turntablism" was beginning to crest, but years after the hard sell subsided it remains an entertaining beat exposition. "Vyce Gripp" weds seesawing Hollywood strings with a programmed beat that wouldn't have been out of place in hip-hop in either 1982, 1988 or 1992; "Billie Klubb" chops up blues guitar riffs over a simple, strutting pulse; and "Can of Kick Ass" paints its elephant-fart beat and dystopian sonic atmosphere day-glo.

  • They Say...

The first widely released LP from the Serial Wax Killer is a one-hour turntablist journey, balancing samples of staid military men with soul shouters and dire science-fiction warnings with instructional LPs, all of them overlaid with dozens of funky breaks and Mike's furious scratching. As consistently fresh and funky as Anti-Theft Device sounds, if this one lacks the energy of his mix tapes (to say nothing of his live appearances), the answer could lie in Asphodel's understandable wish not to get sued over the use of copyrighted material.
