If Moby and Early Underground showcase what was once thought of as the "home-listening-friendly" side of the dance 12-inches Moby made for New York indie label Instinct — the tracks that made him one of the best-loved figures in early '90s rave and set him on his way to bona fide pop stardom — Rare: The Collected B-Sides 1989-1993 is Moby at his most dance floor-minded. When Rare was issued in 1996, these remixes had largely been out of print for a few years, but what's apparent now is that they frequently top the original versions: "Have You Seen My Baby (Baby Mix)" seethes more fiercely; "Drug Fits the Face (Drug Free Mix)" is lovelier; "Next Is the E (Club Mix)" is waaaay more ecstatic — indeed, it may be Moby's most exuberant track ever. All that plus "Thousand," which got him into the Guinness Book of World Records.
