Electro-influenced early stuff from a seminal Detroit techno legend.

We Say...
Model 500 is the name Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins recorded under from 1985 onwards. He and, fellow techno pioneer, Derrick May took their cue from a range of sources, including Parliament, Kraftwerk and new wave. Even early '80s European electronic outfits like DAF and Liaisons Dangereuses were reference points. From 1982, US funk begun taking on an electro component, through the work of early hip-hop innovators like Afrika Bambaataa and Man Parrish, among others. Model 500 was more sleek and linear, though, running in parallel with house music and effectively laying the railtracks towards the towers of techno amid which we live today, occupied by Villalobos, Kompakt, Matthew Dear and so many others.
Some of these tracks, such as “No UFOs,” were subsequently remixed by Atkins to the chagrin of some but the upgrades do serve to keep them vibrant, evolved and competitive rather than preserved as quaint, techno museum pieces. As well as the war-driven bounce of “No UFOs,” highlights here include “Electric Entourage,” which pays direct homage to Kraftwerk's “Musique Non Stop,” picking it up and bearing it along at a quicker pace, as well as “Techno Music,” a black marker pen craze of garrulous acid squiggle which, like Model 500, still cuts it alongside the 21st century sounds it helped inspire. -
They Say...
Classics makes it all clear -- here are the roots of later developments such as techno-funk, acid-house, rave and trance, most released years before the forms became popular. Spanning the years 1985 to 1990 (in roughly chronological order), tracks like "No UFOs," "Sound of Stereo, " "Night Drive" and "The Chase" form one of the most consistent, forward-looking discographies of the decade, alternately noisy and sublime.
