They Say...
A supplement to the highly ambitious three-volume set collecting the Complete Tape Music of Dick Raaijmakers, Dutch label Basta harvested a wildly eclectic group of artists ranging from German minimal dancefloor producers (Isolée) to cassette collecting, noise guitar indie rock icons (Thurston Moore) and everywhere else in between for interpretations of Raaijmakers' work. The results vary from artist to artist -- giving the compilation a very uneven feel at times -- but there are individual standouts that make this compilation an interesting listen. Keith Fullerton Whitman's "Vier Fanfares" plays it somewhat safe, relying on many of the palettes and sonic manipulation that you'd find on his recordings, as does Thurston Moore. While many of these artists come from different backgrounds and styles, it's immediately evident that Raaijmakers' work has influenced their production aesthetics ever so slightly. A curious listen, and one that's easily collectable for devoted fans of any of these artists.
“ The indie iTunes — Hardcore music fans are migrating to eMusic, the iTunes Music Store's cheaper, cooler cousin.”
