  • We Say...

Mouth Music — essentially Martin Swan plus a varying guest list — have been simplifying their sound since their early-'90s debut. This time around, their sound is stripped down to the bone, based around Swan's vocals, Celtic fiddle, percussion and keyboards, yet somehow never feels empty. Swan has a wonderful knack for composing lilting, traditional-sounding melodies that sound as if they've walked out of Irish history, then subverting them with left-field lyrics, as on "Maisie's an Earth Girl." He's achieved something special here: something subtle, sometimes enigmatic and always softly powerful. With Martin Furrey on Uillean pipes and Kaela Rowan helping out on vocals on a couple of tracks, he proves that less can definitely be more, whether it's the ache of "Are You Experienced" (not the Hendrix song), the questing of "We Are Material" or the quiet passion that propels "The Dae Doors." Swan's been working at this craft for a long time now, and with The Order of Things, he's mastered it.
