Chicago blues begins here.

  • We Say...

Muddy’s one of those artists whose primary output — his Chess sides — is so strong it’d be hard to fashion a bad album out of any combination of songs you cared to use. From the hoodoo of “Louisiana Blues” to the adrenaline rush of “Rollin’ & Tumblin’” to the sexual bravado of “I Just Want to Make Love to You,” the second of the two disks that make up this set has a slight edge. That said, it’d be nice if both had a few more “hits.” Whether recording with sparse backing or his pioneering electric band, Muddy’s stinging, rhythmic slide and virile, just-behind-the-beat vocals cut a swath at once menacing and sensual. Chicago blues begins here.
