  • They Say...

Killing Joke were one of Britain's more important and consistently interesting post-punk bands, but like many of their general ilk, they had a difficult time staying together. In the early '90s, during one of Killing Joke's many trial separations, guitarist Geordie Walker, bassist Paul Raven, and drummers Martin Atkins and Paul Ferguson released an album and an EP under the moniker Murder Inc., both of which are reissued (with some live bonus tracks) as part of a two-disc package here. As might be expected, the group's sound is somewhat reminiscent of Killing Joke's -- massed, super crunchy guitars, tribal drumming, and riff-based song structures couched in dense, claustrophobic production. The main differences are in the vocals -- more intelligible and less interesting than those of Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman, and in the melodies -- also less interesting than those in Killing Joke's best work. A notable exception is the song "Murder Inc.," which proves once and for all that a Scots accent is not necessarily an impediment to rapping. "Hole in the Wall" is more metal, and almost as good. The second disc in this set consists of three Foetus remixes, five live tracks, and a weird studio outtake.
