  • They Say...

Born out of occasional jams between elite members of Sweden's death metal community (most notably Entombed guitarist Uffe Cederlund and former Carnage, later Dismember vocalist Matti Karki), Murder Squad actually sounds not unlike early Entombed with an added hardcore ingredient (qualifying them as a Swedish version of S.O.D., perhaps). In fact, their 2001 album, Unsane, Insane and Mentally Deranged, even utilizes the same gore-styled font seen on that band's classic Wolverine Blues. But death metal purists now clinging to the edge of their seats in anticipation be warned: this is hardly Wolverine Blues part two. Instead, what listeners get is an extremely rough, good-time record (if there is such a thing in death metal) quickly patched together from a mere two sessions recorded on consecutive weekends. Grindcore gore lyrics dealing with the usual blood, guts, and puke are spewed with obvious glee over cleverly titled tracks like "Sent Home in a Box," "Bloodfreak," and "Impaled," making for an entertaining throwback to a more, er, innocent time in death metal.
