The lighter side of Japanese psychedelic

  • We Say...

When they first appeared in the late '90s, Nagisa Ni Te represented the lighter side of the Japanese psychedelic movement, shyly drawing on Kevin Ayers or the Clean rather than Blue Cheer. Now on their sixth album, the band (essentially a core duo of Shinji Shibayama and Masako Takeda) is venturing ever closer to traditional '60s rock, incorporating such standbys as bouncy tremolo organ, acoustic guitars and wistful chord changes, accompanied by a slow groove most often associated with Neil Young (the groups name translates as "On the Beach," the title of a classic Young album).

The cheerful opener "Premonition" and tracks like "Midsummer Overhead" reinforce the album's overall evocation of the listless feeling of a day spent at the beach. On the other hand, "Ishi River" is a sparse, almost eerie piece with a hushed, hesitant vocal, a naked organ drone and light cymbal taps. The title track's odd, percolating rhythms, burbles and bursts of organ also deviate from the rest of the songs' sunny, lazy pace. If Damon and Naomi had grown up hearing J-Pop and Japanese folk music, Yosuga could be what they might sound like.
