  • We Say...

Ohmega Watts returns for a second slab of wide-ranging hip-hop on Watts Happening and not a moment too soon. In a struggling indie hip-hop market, Watts is a breath of fresh air, dropping enough thoughtful rhymes and quality productions to keep heads satiated until the next go-round. Watts is sufficient lyrically, but the real star here is the beats, which go from marimba-aided bossa nova ("Adaptacao") to chunky updates on the old school ("Few and Far Between") to Afrobeat ("The Platypus Strut") more easily than you'd imagine possible. He gets help from people like label mate Shawn Lee, but Ohmega is an outstanding producer in his own right. (Both "Few..." and "The Platypus Strut" are his own.)
