We Say...
Great Lake Swimmers’ third album gets its name from the boat that the trio took to Toronto Island; the group recorded at the cavernous sounding Aeolian Hall. After they came home, however, they began to call up many of their friends to help out in fleshing out those initial recordings. Bob Egan of Blue Rodeo mans the pedal steel, while Polaris Music nominees Sarah Harmer and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) also check in (providing backing vocals and string arrangements, respectively). It’s their contributions that helps makes Onigara a step above its predecessors: the band now seems fuller and willing to take chances their first two albums lacked. Even so, it might just be traditionalist opener “Your Rocky Spine” that works best: Singer/songwriter Tony Dekker sets out a brisk tempo in which Erik Arnesen easily settles his banjo licks into, while Harmer adds color to the chorus.
“ The indie iTunes — Hardcore music fans are migrating to eMusic, the iTunes Music Store's cheaper, cooler cousin.”
