  • They Say...

On First Base, Operation Makeout plays crunchy, teen-angst-ridden rock that falls somewhere between the tear-the-house-down punk of Bikini Kill and the pop groove of Unrest. "Buckles and Sneers" benefits from the female/male combo vocals of guitarist Katie and bassist Jesse. "Haircut" has the stop-and-go angular vibe of Gang of Four. But the winner on this album is "Neon Eyes," an off-kilter surf rock tune that evokes the lost-in-this-world statements of Poly Styrene and the X-Ray Spex.
