  • We Say...

“Guilty as Charged,” a one-minute twenty-second freestyle, opens Vulture’s Wisdom: Volume One with both gunshots and force. The brisk introduction is characteristic of the whole album’s laid back vibe of soulful production blended with clever, tongue-twisting wordplay. This sound perpetuates the entire release and manages to transport listeners back to the West Coast hip-hop world of the 1990s, while Kanye, Pharrell, and Weezy references on “I Need a Money Tree” serve as a reminder that it’s 2008.

Opio’s sound may be aged, but he’s certainly not dated and his mind is clearly still at work. He proves himself a master of the simile, with nearly every other track sprinkled with witty comparisons ranging from the amusing (“look at corny rapping like Brian Austin Green”) to the suitably crass (“your one song sucked like a dumb blond”).
