  • We Say...

Though he lacks the discography to support the claim, Otis Rush is probably (along with B.B. King) the greatest blues guitarist and singer alive. His career is full of long blank periods where he recorded little and got those recordings released even less. He's sometimes been his own worst enemy, but at his best, he created some of the most harrowing, funky modern blues of the last half-century. And the sides collected here — his earliest for the short-lived Chicago label that plied so-called West Side blues — established his reputation.

The West Side sound came from a new generation of artists — also including Magic Sam and Buddy Guy — who worked clubs on the West, rather than South, Side of Chicago; their modern big-city blues showed few of the rural-Mississippi influences of South Siders like Muddy and Wolf. Rush's "I Can't Quit You Baby," his debut single, a moody, minor-key slow blues with high, pained vocals and razorblade guitar, pretty much defines the sound, wrapping it in a scarifying shroud of naked emotion. Though sometimes saddled with weak material by producer Willie Dixon, Rush pressed forward with finely textured cries like "All Your Love," Groaning the Blues," Checking on My Baby" and, with Ike Turner joining him for deadly guitar exchanges, "Double Trouble" (Stevie Ray Vaughan named his band after that one). Such gems brought the Delta-rooted music all the way into the modern world. This disk augments all 17 of Rush's original Cobra sides with seven alternate takes. It's indispensable.

  • They Say...

Otis Rush's debut recordings for the Cobra label are defining moments of Chicago blues. Seldom had a young Windy City artist recorded with this much harrowing emotion in both his singing and playing, simulataneously connecting with the best that Delta blues had to offer while plunging headlong into the electric future. These are the songs that continue to be the building blocks of his legend; "All Your Love," "Double Trouble," "I Can't Quit You, Baby," "Groaning the Blues," "It Takes Time," and "Checking on My Baby" are all singular masterpieces. This single disc collection features all sixteen Cobra sides issued as singles plus the bonus of four alternate takes, all presented here with the best sound to date. These are milestone recordings in the history of the blues and an essential part of anyone's collection.
