  • We Say...

You may have heard of this one. You may even be aware that a recording or five hundred is already available — indeed, new versions seem to grow as if by asexual reproduction, recorded by every soloist imaginable. Little-known fact: between the typing of the words "hundreds" and "upon hundreds," five more recordings of the Four Seasons were completed.

Still, there's a reason people keep recording this piece; it's indestructible, as permanent and unavoidable as the seasons themselves — perhaps even more so. But instead of pondering a grim future in which Vivaldi fans turn to this work to imagine what autumn might have felt like, we can listen to this version, by the Czech virtuoso Pavel Sporcl. He plays the piece with a lively, light touch that makes the music feel every bit as refreshing as it is meant to be, and the dynamic range of the recording is impressive; the surging crescendos in the "Winter" movement buffet the listener like the shuddering gusts of icy winter they are meant to evoke. If you don't have a recording, this is a great one.
