  • They Say...

Not so much a standalone compilation as it is the doppelgänger of Shabaam Sahdeeq's 2006 album Strategize, this 16-track mixtape is kind of like the hip-hop equivalent of a dub album. Unlike many mixtapes, which use flagrantly lifted samples of current pop hits refashioned into the basis of new songs that could never otherwise be legally released, or which feature tracks by new young MCs in the producer's crew who are looking for some street buzz, Strategize: The Mixtape Album #2 is basically a straight remix of the original record, expanded with a few new tracks based on the same beats. Producer DJ Revolution is completely in charge here, sending Sahdeeq's songs through effects, turntable scratching and dub-style remixing to create a woozy, distorted mirror image of the original. Far more inventive and original than the onslaught of "chopped and screwed" mixes that think that merely slowing the tape down to half speed is enough, Strategize: The Mixtape Album #2 is solid enough to stand on its own.
