  • We Say...

Gospel roaring its way from an alternate universe
The voices of Polynesia aim at the spirit, roaring like a massive gospel choir from an alternate universe. And there are certainly parallels between the two, as they developed from the Evangelical churches that sprang up and used hymns as one of their tools to turn the Maoris to Christianity from their "heathen" ways. But these giant choral ensembles have made those hymns their own, so now they sit naturally next to local songs, almost unrecognizable in the warm and welcoming harmonies that characterize the islands. It teeters on the edge of alien — listen to the stately "I Haere Mai Nei Oe Ietu" which seems constantly in danger of falling apart but resolves itself in regal splendor, while "Timona Pereto" and "Ripo E" are as stirring as any gospel track but pulled from an utterly different well. It's a reminder that the voice is the oldest instrument — and still the most powerful.
