  • We Say...

Undaunted envelope-pusher Prince Paul has spent damn near 20 years producing hip-hop albums that confound radio programmers and record execs; his outsider status has made him both a pioneering hip-hop architect (De La Soul, Stetsasonic) and a commercially ignored cult figure (Handsome Boy Modeling School, his ambitious and schizophrenic solo joints). Politics of the Business is (surprise!) a cheeky and vitriolic look at the bloated hip-hop machine that forces him into the fringes — but, ironically, it features his most accessible and radio-ready beats ever. Leaving his kitschy sample crate behind, Paul dabbles in blippy Neptunes grindin' ("Controversial Headlines AKA Champion Sound (Pt 2)"), gritty Erick Sermon head-bangers ("Make Room") and syncopated Swizz jigginess ("Not Tryin' to Hear That"). Since this is strictly business, cameos abound: Guru, Erick Sermon, HeaPlanet Asia, Jean Grae and a decimating can't-miss verse from MF Doom over a resurrected De La hand-clapper.
