The greatest of a fabulous soul-jazz organist.

  • We Say...

The title Memorial Album sounds like a downer, party-wise, but here it just signifies a posthumous compilation of an artist's memorable work, and with Shirley Scott (1934-2002) there's plenty of good stuff to remember. Hailing like so many great jazz organists from Philadelphia, Scott in the 1950s quickly established herself as a titan of the Hammond B-3, with a swaggering sense of timing and punchy keyboard attack. Her aggressive comping was catnip for great tenor saxophonists: On this 1958-1964 sampler they include Stanley Turrentine (Mr. Scott, for a time), Lockjaw Davis, Oliver Nelson and (on one four-tenor face-off) Coleman Hawkins. The tempos are lively, the playing forceful enough to stand up to boisterous guests, and there are some great hard-bop tunes, like Benny Golson's "Five Spot After Dark," Horace Silver's "SeƱor Blues" and Mr. Rollins's "Sonnymoon for Two."
