  • They Say...

With the release of this CD, pianist/vocalist Randy Klein takes his place as one of the better jazz lyricists. Six of the eight originals feature his singing and scatting and they deal with such subject matters as avoiding negativity, not wanting to get out of bed to go to work, the need to live in the present, being buried by an excess of information and his love for coffee. The two instrumentals are sensitive duets featuring Klein's piano and bassist Harvie Swartz while the other selections utilize a standard quartet with the tenor of Michael Migliore. On the minus side, the music is not as memorable as the lyrics and therefore it is doubtful if any of these songs will be covered by other musicians. Perhaps for next time Randy Klein should get a musical partner to match his witty words to catchier melodies.
