The Genius learning his craft.

  • We Say...

It's too bad that when Ray Charles died in 2004, the music most people heard played in tribute were either well-known — and well-worn — classics like "Georgia on My Mind," "Hit the Road, Jack," "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "What'd I Say" — or the duets he'd cut (and was actually still working on when he died) with obliging partners ranging from Norah Jones and Diana Krall to James Taylor and Willie Nelson. By then, it was the Genius' voice that was well-worn. That's why I love this album, covering the beginnings of Charles the jazz pianist and copycat. He was well aware that he sounded like Nat King Cole. As he told me in 1972, "I loved the man so much . . . and I tried to imitate him." Blues is a generous collection of cuts from the late '40s, when he was recording for the Swing Time label. Highlights include his first release, "Confession Blues," his cocktail jazz reading of Howlin' Wolf's "Sitting on Top of the World," and the jaunty "Rockin' Chair Blues," a nod to the club he was working in Seattle when he got his first record deal. It's a revealing and entertaining listen to a man at the dawn of discovery — and of self-discovery.
