We Say...
Ray rewrote the rules on black music, and to label what he did soul-blues is almost to trivialize his truly singular style; even when he played a straight blues like “Losing Hand,” it sounded unlike any other blues around, and landmarks like “I Got a Woman” and “Drown in My Own Tears” put the sound of the black church into r&b and created a whole new thing. Like the other Essence sets, this could use a few more of his monsters, but it’s hard to find fault with most of the music here.
