  • They Say...

This installment of Soundies' Masters of Classic Jazz series compiles 49 radio transcriptions made for the World Transcription service in the 1940s. The half-dozen featured acts were seminal Dixieland players in the '30s and/or earlier who made these recordings following late-career revivals, rediscoveries, or aborted retirements. James P. Johnson and Wingy Manone are two particularly noteworthy contributors, and it is interesting to hear such high-fidelity recordings by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Many of the pieces merge jazz with popular songs, resulting in unexpected gems such as Wingy Manone's Dixieland interpretation of "Home on the Range" and Miff Mole's "Peg of My Heart." Masters of Classic Jazz: Dixieland offers an abundance of spirited Dixieland jazz for average listeners and an inventory of disographical oddities for serious enthusiasts.
