  • They Say...

One of the best ways to hear dancehall is on the bootleg mix-CDs that are sold outside of reggae festivals, at urban record stores, and on the internet. Problem is, they take some work to find and newbies can be turned away from the genre for good by a bad boot (and there's plenty). Jamdown Records Fifth Anniversary Edition isn't a boot, but it shares their spirit with its rapid pace and numerous artists. As a label sampler it works because killer tracks from Sean Paul, Mr. Vegas, and Tony Rebel are short enough to make you want more. As a pseudo-boot it also works since the mixing is very tight and the chaotic pace is invigorating. Put it this way: Goofy's rather limited "Somebody Just Poop," was tedious in it's original four minutes, but knocked down to two and mixed together with the surrounding tracks, it's nearly classic. Respect to Jamdown for bringing the boot experience to the masses, minus the crap artwork and shoddy, skipping CD-ROMs.
