  • We Say...

Here's a textbook example of how black ministers used the pulpit during the civil rights era to rouse and motivate their congregations. The Rev. Jasper Williams takes an historical and spiritual approach, his mighty speech utilizing some of the same color metaphors favored by other master sermonizers such as the Rev. Cleophus Robinson and the ultimate preacher, the Rev. C.L. Franklin. Quoting from the Bible one moment and Dr. King the next and equating freedom and salvation through Christ with pride and reverence for one's background and heritage, Williams builds drama, pauses and refuels just like a great singer, never letting his audience get too high or too low through the sermon. Occasionally there are hilarious moments, and he's fond of the verbal gestures, frequent calls for support and other exaggerated mannerisms lampooned by Richard Pryor in his "Rev. Mudbone" routines. But Williams also exhorted, railed and encouraged his followers to keep on fighting.
