  • We Say...

With this release, harpsichordist Richard Egarr offers a maverick interpretation of Bach's famed Goldberg Variations: he plays in what recent research theorizes was the composer's own tuning system, based on a decoding of what looks like a decorative squiggle drawn by Bach on the manuscript page of another of his works, the Well-Tempered Clavier. Even without taking into account that particular musicological point, Egarr gives a very fine performance, full of rich textures and shadings, which make this recording well worth hearing for more casual listeners.
